I think is nice to have comments on your articles as it allows you to discuss the topic with your readers and allows you to receive feedback. Also your readers can share their experience which helps to enrich your post and may be helpful for a future reader. At times the comments may bring to light some things that you may have not considered at all and may change your opinion too.
Recently blog comments are being exploited for their link juice value, and do follow blogs are the worst hit of the lot. Its essential to install a comment spam filter like Akismet if you want to stop spam from appearing on your hard written blog posts. However sometimes you come across comments that are written in good language and grammar and they manage to get past the spam filter, but you'll know its spam because they do not make any sense in the context of the post they are on.
For example I got a comment "Your last point is very important. Keeping in touch with past clients has always been key nowadays even more so."
on the post Nokia N79 Look Alike where I posted about a phone that I came across that looked like the Nokia N79, the one I'm using and has nothing to do with past clients.
Thats just one of the very obvious spam comments among several others. I guess that there is some software being used here that is posting these comments on several blogs. But let me warn you that I moderate every comment before it appears on this blog so even if you manage to get past the spam filters (lucky you) unless its a real comment I won't approve it. So don't waste your time and mine, and please stop posting spam comment. Besides having a good online reputation is way more important than backlinks.
How has your experience been with spam comments? Are you doing anything different to tackle them?
You should try the Conditional CAPTCHA for Wordpress plugin. That is a great plugin that asks the commenter to complete a simple CAPTCHA if Akismet thinks their comment is spam. I'm sure you will save more time with this. :)

Hmmm, I give that I shot. I've been keeping away from captcha because I don't like it myself, takes atleast attempts sometimes to get it right. I prefer the math puzzles.
ReplyDeleteIt only shows Captcha for comments that is suspicious as spam, so your real commenters will not see the Captcha section. Waiting for moderation is also inconvenient sometimes.

Spam comments haven't been a big problem after I uploaded the WP-Spamfree plugin. My issue right now are all the trackback spam. Been getting tons of trackback spam lately, and if this continues I can just disable trackbacks on that same plugin.

Moderating comments does take up a lot of time that can be used for something else, so I've turned it off for now. I'll see how it goes for a while.

I'm using Akismet and it works fine but at times I go through the blocked comments to check if a genuine comment hasn't been blocked incorrectly.
ReplyDeleteDofollow blogs get huge traffic, but it costs in decrease in pagerank. In my opinion, one should build his page rnak and then allow all links dofollow.
ReplyDeleteYes. I've heard about page rank being lost by do follow blogs but I'm not certain its true. I'm not blogging for page rank anyway, so it doesn't really matter.
ReplyDeleteI use akismet and also moderate very new comment. Its actually quite fun reading some of the crap that the spammers try to post on my blog. I don't know why they keep trying because there is no way that I'll approve spam on my site.

I don't understand them either. Why spam at all? Its just spoiling their reputation, and not benefiting them.
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine life without Akismet or any other WP spam-free plugins. It's time consuming and I really despise the link droppers. Sometimes we still need to double check so our friends won't end up in the spam folder. Gotta give Akismet the credit for doing its job.

Definately. Also the conditional Captcha plugin is working great. All the spam is filtered straight to the trash folder. I just review it once to check for any genuine comments and empty trash. Saves a lot of time deleting individual comments.
